No video output vga pci slot?

i have a dell that used to have a dvi slot for its output video. i no longer have that card i happen to have a vga card that goes into the pci slot. i pulled in the vga and i get no video output. is this possible to fix?|||try the vga card on another PC; A friends maybe. If it works, Check the connection or the your PCI slot. if not then its simply dead.
